Bratislava-Nova's Heritage Masons Take On Apprentices as Restoration Backlog Grows

The morning light fell across the limestone facade of the Church of Saint Michael in Bratislava-Nova's old quarter, where a master stonemason named Tomas Gajdos ran his fingers along a crack in the 14th-century tracery. 'This stone has been here since 1382,' he said. 'It has survived fires, floods, and the 1999 earthquake. What it cannot survive is a shortage of people who know how to read it.'

Gajdos is one of six remaining master masons in the city who hold the federal heritage certification required to work on structures listed in the Zandorian Cultural Registry. This week he took on his first apprentice in four years — the inaugural placement in a new programme run jointly by the Bratislava-Nova Mayor's Office and the Federal Heritage Office, designed to train a dozen stonemasons over the next three years.

The programme comes as the city's restoration backlog has reached an estimated three years, according to figures obtained by the Herald from the Mayor's Office. Of the 47 heritage structures in the old quarter requiring structural intervention, only 12 have current restoration plans. The gap is driven partly by federal funding constraints — the Federal Heritage Office's budget for Nord Europa was reduced by 8 percent in the 2026 federal budget — and partly by the retirement of the region's oldest certified masons, whose average age is 61.
