Nord Europa Assembly Votes Emergency Boost for Heritage Restoration Fund

The Nord Europa Regional Assembly voted 38 to 12 on Wednesday to approve an emergency 12 million florin supplement to the Heritage Restoration Fund, with Governor Eva Novák signing the measure the same afternoon. The allocation addresses a mounting crisis: labor costs for skilled restoration work have risen 34 percent in two years, freezing at least eight major projects across the plateau and threatening the completion of the Tatra Cathedral's western facade restoration, scheduled to conclude in 2027.

The vote came after a two-hour committee hearing in which the Assembly's Heritage and Civic Works Committee heard testimony from three major restoration contractors and the Federal Heritage Office's regional coordinator. The contractors reported that journeyman stonemasons and timber-frame specialists are being recruited away to higher-wage positions in tech-sector office renovations in Bratislava-Nova and competing bids from Oriente Moderno's Nueva Singapur development sector.

The Assembly's regionalist opposition, the Nord-Slovaka Bloko, abstained rather than vote against the measure, though its leader Karol Lindqvist remarked in chamber that the emergency spoke to broader questions about whether federal tech-sector growth was hollowing out the region's traditional crafts. The governing coalition of centrists and greens held firm across the vote.
