Monthly tallies from four monitoring stations reveal progress against accumulated coastal debris as dry season deepens

The Costa Mar Reef Monitoring Network released its October figures on Friday, showing that coordinated cleanup efforts at Playa Verde, Bahía Profunda, and Punta Negra have reduced visible plastic accumulation by an average of eighteen percent compared to the same month last year. The three beaches together yielded 11.8 tons of sorted debris—bottles, fishing line, microplastics trapped in sediment nets—over the past thirty days. The fourth station, at Cabo Blanco, recorded a slight uptick in nutrient phosphorus levels, a reversal that prompted the network to recommend increased testing frequency there.
The tallies arrive as the dry season tightens Costa Mar's water cycle. Reservoir levels on the hydro grid have stabilized at seventy-two percent of capacity, and local officials are weighing whether to maintain current tourism quotas through December without risking further strain on freshwater supplies. The cleanup gains, however modest, offer a counterweight to the seasonal pressures that typically degrade water quality as rainfall diminishes.
Marina Soto, coordinator of the Reef Monitoring Network's beach program, said the October results reflect work by both the regional Marine Ministry and volunteer dive cooperatives. She noted that the nutrient spike at Cabo Blanco warrants investigation into whether upstream agricultural runoff or septic discharge has increased during the dry months. The network plans a detailed sediment analysis by mid-November.
