Nord Europa Assembly debates federal water allocation amid Danube low‑water crisis

On Tuesday the Nord Europa Assembly convened a special session of the Water Resources Committee as the Danube gauge in the southern valley fell to its lowest level in a decade. The water level, recorded at 1.2 metres, has already forced a reduction in barge traffic and limited hydro‑electric output at the regional plant.

Members of the governing Parti de Unueco urged a balanced approach that would protect essential services while preserving the river for agricultural users downstream. The opposition Nord‑Slovaka Bloko demanded that any allocation formula be decided at the federal level to avoid regional favoritism, citing the Constitution’s inter‑regional equity clause.

Governor Eva Novák reminded the chamber that Nord Europa’s technology sector contributes over 30 % of the Republic’s software exports, and a prolonged shortage could jeopardise several multinational contracts. Treasury Minister Marcus Eklund added that the federal treasury is prepared to allocate emergency funding for water‑saving infrastructure, but only if the bill includes strict accountability measures.

The committee will reconvene on 22 September to vote on the draft amendment, and this report will follow the outcome and its likely impact on regional industry, agriculture and the upcoming federal water‑policy review.
