On Tuesday, the Nord Europa Assembly convened a special session to consider the Digital Resilience Act, a bill introduced after a recent cyber intrusion disrupted key regional industries. The debate opened with Speaker Sigrid Halvarsson outlining the urgency of reinforcing the Republic’s digital infrastructure, especially for sectors that rely on software‑driven logistics.

The intrusion, reported last week, targeted the central software platform that coordinates rail freight for the plateau’s craft breweries and the federal procurement system for heritage‑restoration contracts. Over a 48‑hour period the malware encrypted data, halted shipments, and forced the suspension of several public‑works tenders, costing an estimated ₣ 2.3 million in lost revenue and delayed repairs to historic façades.

Members of the five parliamentary parties expressed divergent views. The governing Unity Party (PdU) and the Green Path (LVA) urged swift passage, citing the need to protect the Republic’s most urban bloc. Federal Renewal (FR) warned that mandatory audits could burden small enterprises, while the Nord‑Slovak Bloc (NSB) argued the bill infringes on regional autonomy. The Esperanto Citizenship Movement (MEC) pushed for a stronger federal oversight mechanism, proposing a central cyber‑response centre staffed by the Federal Treasury and the Federal Cultural Affairs Ministry.

The Assembly will vote on the final text next week, and the bill’s fate could shape the Republic’s approach to digital security for years to come.
