Anthrax Outbreak Prompts Health Warning in Rural Tierra Verde

The Federal Health Ministry announced a regional alert on Tuesday after three residents of interior Tierra Verde tested positive for anthrax infection. All three cases were linked to the consumption of meat from wild animals—a common practice in rural areas where hunting and foraging supplement the diet of farming families. The outbreak has prompted warnings across the region and raised questions about wildlife surveillance systems that are meant to detect such threats before they reach human populations.

The three confirmed cases are being treated at the regional hospital in San Vicente. One patient, a hunter from a town near the Río Esperanto, reported finding a dead deer near his property and preparing it for his family's table. Another case involved a forager who collected small game from the forest. The third case has not yet been fully traced, though health officials believe it is also linked to wild-animal consumption. No deaths have been reported, and the ministry said all three patients are responding to treatment.

The outbreak highlights a persistent tension in Tierra Verde's rural economy: the region's smallholders and farming families rely on hunting and foraging to supplement their income and diet, particularly in seasons when cooperative-managed crops do not yet yield. The practice is legal and culturally rooted, but it also exposes people to risks that urban populations do not face. The Federal Health Ministry has issued guidance asking hunters to report any unusual animal deaths to local authorities rather than harvesting the meat.
