When smoke crosses borders, Costa Mar seeks answers upstream

The fires are not new — dry seasons produce them regularly — but their scale and proximity to the coast have prompted Costa Mar's Marine Ministry to file a formal complaint with Meridian's Federal Civic Affairs Ministry, alleging that Tierra Verde's fire management protocols are inadequate and that the smoke is degrading coastal air quality and threatening tourism revenue.

The complaint, filed on July 16, marks an escalation in a long-standing regional tension: Costa Mar's economic model depends on clean air and clear water, while Tierra Verde's agricultural economy sometimes requires controlled burns to manage land. The two regions have never shared a border and conduct no direct negotiations, but the smoke drifting across the federation's airspace has made the friction impossible to ignore.
