The Oriente Moderno Financial Authority announced on Tuesday that its cross‑border settlement platform will be offline for up to 48 hours. The suspension follows an unexpected surge in fraud alerts generated by an artificial‑intelligence module deployed by a local fintech firm. The alerts flagged more than 12,000 transactions as suspicious, far exceeding the system’s normal rate of a few dozen per day. Officials say the spike appears to be a software fault rather than a coordinated attack.

The flagged transactions involved payments linked to shipping schedules, freight‑forwarder invoices and offshore financing for the Nueva Singapur port complex. Several container‑shipping companies reported that their invoices were held pending verification, causing a temporary slowdown in cargo clearance. The Oriente Moderno Financial Authority, in coordination with the Federal Treasury, instructed banks to hold the flagged payments while a manual review proceeded. The Ministry of Finance’s Marcus Eklund warned that prolonged delays could affect the region’s quarterly trade balance.

NexGen AI, the startup that supplied the algorithm, issued a brief statement blaming a recent model update for the false positives. The company’s chief technologist, Li Mei, said the update unintentionally broadened the definition of “high‑risk” patterns, causing legitimate trade flows to be misidentified. The Federal Court has been asked to review whether existing regulations sufficiently cover AI‑driven financial services. The Authority plans to resume normal operations once the review is complete, and a briefing for the Federal Assembly is scheduled for early November.
